The following descendant chart was constructed primarily from the article: "Zur Stammbaumforschung", by A. Lewin (Hoppstaedten, Germany), in the journal Judische Familien-Forschung, March 1928, Jahrgang (vol.) IV, Nr. 1 or Nr. 13 of all issues, Berlin, pp. 23 - 26. This journal was a Jewish Genealogical Journal published in Germany before World War II. Copies of the journal are held by the New York Public Library, as well as others in the US and other countries. I found the citation in a book entitled Jewish Genealogy by David Zubatsky, which is an index of published genealogical sources by family name. The book can be purchased from Avotaynu.
Hoppstaedten was a small town with a very small Jewish community. In the same article, there is a list of all the Jewish families living in Hoppstaedten and nearby Birkenfeld up to the 1850's: Einhorn (1842, from Diespeck / Bavaria--moved to America and became one of the most famous American rabbis of the Reform Movement), Frank (1817), Gerber (1817), Goldschmidt, Hecht (1845, from Nordheim / Bavaria), Hirsch (1817), Kronenberg/-er, Leiser (1817), Richard (1817), Schiffmann (1817), Steinfels (1817), Stern, Wechsler (1841, from Bavaria), Weil (1817).
Until the early 1800's, most Jews in Germany did not have surnames as we now know them. They used patronymics, which means that a father's first name would become his children's last name (with some exceptions). You can see this clearly in the chart below. Lazarus's son became Sender LAZARUS, while Sender's children took SENDER as a kind of surname. At the time of registering permanent surnames for the family, two sons of Schlaumen SENDER chose the name STERN. As far as we know, the children of Leyser SENDER kept the name LEYSER, which they later began to spell LEISER. We know a great deal about some of the Modern Descendants of Sender LEYSER.
The earliest generations on the chart below lived in the town of Hoppstaedten. However, in my research about nearby Soetern, I have found a branch of the SENDER family which I believe to be descended from the Moses SENDER at the bottom of the chart. I do not yet have proof, but I believe that at least some of the SENDER family in Soetern is descended in the following way:
| | Moses SENDER (ca 1717? - ) | | | Sender MOISES (ca 1740 - ) & Gudel HENDELE | | | | Loeb SENDER (ca 1764 - 29 Aug 1822) & Mamel SELIGMAN
It is possible that descendants of David SENDER also lived in Soetern. I am in the process of transcribing the vital records of all the Jewish individuals for Soetern, Bosen, and Gonnesweiler from the LDS microfilms to try to establish a link between the Soetern and Hoppstaedten SENDER families.
